Bow Valley High School (BVHS) students were excited to host a Horizons Leadership Conference earlier this week.

“I am really excited – it was really cool to see us plan something this big and it is a really cool way to connect without social media,” said Santana Shukin, 16-year-old student at Bow Valley High School.

On Nov. 22, over 300 guests from across southern Alberta, including students and advisors, attended the day-long conference.

The event featured a variety of activities and presenters, including keynote speakers Ian Tyson and Alison Springer, with guest speakers Dave Conlon and Stu Sanders.

“It’s incredible – it is so great to see young faces walk into the building so excited,” said Tracey Demeo, organizer and education assistant at BVHS.

“It takes a big team to put this together … and we always put a lot of effort and practice into every event we host.”

The conference is structured to motivate, inspire and inform students to help make their schools a better place to work and participate in.

It was also designed to offer advisors an opportunity to network and learn how to build programs that “further foster leadership in student leaders within their school community.”

High school attendees said they would “definitely” recommend that future students host and attend leadership conferences in the years to come.

The event was provided by the Canadian Student Leadership Association with the motto “to motivate, inspire and educate advisors and student leaders across Canada.”
