"We're inching closer to naming the bridge," Mayor Jeff Genung said following discussion on the shortlist of names presented to council Monday night
One of the 11 names that made it to the shortlist will be the moniker of the new Bow River span, following a public vote to decide.
More than 200 suggestions were submitted during the survey period and of those 124 were considered unique and 39 did not fit the categories. The 11 with the highest votes were then shortlisted - it would have been 10 but the 10th and 11th spot tied.
Originally, the plan was to present a shortlist based on the top choices from each category but council decided to give the public a greater variety of choice.
Voting will be open to the public for a 30-day period and votes can be cast either online or through paper submissions, which will be available at the Visitor Information Centre, Seniors on the Bow and the Cochrane Public Library. To vote online go to http://www.letstalkcochrane.ca/bridge
Coun. Morgan Nagel asked if administration could ensure a higher degree of security on the online poll that would prevent, or make it more difficult, for people to vote multiple times.
Following some discussion, it was suggested the online poll would feature a registration process that would require a voter's full name and email address. However, administration opted for a system where people submit their vote and full name.
