Organizers are on the hunt for community spring-cleaning volunteers.

A local committee is organizing Cochrane’s inaugural community wide cleanup on April 23 from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

“Part of it was to look for something that kids could volunteer in, there are very few things that kids could volunteer for in Cochrane – so this is a great opportunity for families with little kids to volunteer and do something great for the environment,” said organizer Marni Fedeyko.

The community cleanup will run in partnership with the river cleanup hosted by Andrew Watson of Shoreline Risers Guiding Company, and with help from Tim Giese, chair of the Cochrane Environmental Action Committee (CEAC). Watson has hosted several river cleanups in the community since the 2013 flood.

“Last year the cleanup was just based at Mitford Pond, starting from the park down to the river, and this year we are going to do sections,” Watson explained.

“I think it is going to be great. I think it shows a little bit of respect for where we live and keeping everything clean is a good thing.”

While more than a month away, organizers are currently seeking volunteers for the event. The cleanup will need a couple volunteers for each station to help hand out supplies, and as many volunteers as possible to help clean.

“This is one event, where I would like to see businesses out, residents out, and I just want to see Cochrane as a beautiful place. It really benefits the whole town and all it is going to take is a couple of hours… many hands make light work,” Fedeyko said.

Organizers are still in the planning stages but would like to note that they are open to accepting sponsorship for the event, to help with the cost of supplies, and Fedeyko said she is hopeful to get some drinks and snacks donated.

At the end of the cleanup, organizers want to calculate the amount of waste picked up and are hopeful to turn the cleanup into an annual or bi-annual event.
