After receiving a generous grant, the Cochrane Public Library staff will be organizing a Women’s Day forum on March 11.
While International Women’s Day is officially March 8, the library will be hosting the event on the weekend to give more people a chance to attend.
“We are hosting this because we are celebrating women and we want to build a strong network of local women and work towards a more gender-inclusive world,” said Gail Ames, library assistant and event organizer.
The theme for the inaugural event is #BeBoldForChange offering attendees a chance to hear from “inspiring” keynote speakers while also offering networking opportunities.
The list of speakers include Crystal Philips, Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40, Umashanie Reddy, RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant 2015 winner, Belle Levisky, 11-year-old Mighty Girl founder and CEO of 7 Fins Forever, and Kate MacKenzie, who ran in the secret marathon in Afghanistan with Eagle columnist Martin Parnell.
International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900s and continues to celebrate economic, cultural, and political achievements of women across the world. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity, according to the website.
The International Women’s Day Forum in Cochrane is free, with lunch to be provided. Those interested need to register with their library card in person or by phone to secure a ticket. Space is limited.
