The Cochrane Legion has increased the budget for its community cenotaph project to $170,000 in an effort to make the site more of a community landmark.

The announcement was made during Tuesday’s Rotary Club of Cochrane meeting in conjunction with a $5,000 donation from the club to the cenotaph project.

The original budget for the project was approximately $120,000 for a commissioned bronze statue of a First World War soldier. The work on the piece is being done by Cochrane’s Studio West Bronze Foundry and Art Gallery.

David Usherwood, legion first vice-president, said the revised budget will include a new flag pole, walkway enhancements and possibly benches.

“We want it to be accessible to all,” said Usherwood. “It’ll be a landmark. That’s the goal.”
