For those who are finding it a little hard to stay jolly this holiday season, perhaps a trip to the Cochrane Children’s Choir’s Christmas in the Country is in order.

The family-friendly concert and event — held on Dec. 16 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church — may be the cure for even the most lackluster holiday spirit.

“This event is for the community,” said Erica Phare-Bergh, the artistic director and conductor of the choir. “There are horses, hayrides, carolling and a big barbeque. Last year, it was really well received by families — it was a lot of fun.”

In 2011, the entertainment was provided by the musical voices of the Rocky Mountain Children’s Choir.

This year, it’s the Cochrane choir’s turn to shake things up with a variety songs ranging from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, to traditional carols. The music will be a mixture of Christmas tunes and Hanukkah songs, said Phare-Bergh.

“There is just something about the beauty of children’s voices,” she added. “It breaks through barriers in a way I don’t think other choirs can.”

The Cochrane Children’s Choir is open to children in Grades 2 through to Grade 9. Currently, there are about 27 young singers in the group.

The concert gets underway at 2 p.m. Admission into the event is free, but donations will be accepted for both the Cochrane Activette’s Food Bank and the Angel Fund.
