Nothing says holiday spirit like chopping down your own Christmas tree, and the Cochrane Ecological Institute (CEI) is giving you the chance to take part in the Holiday tradition for a good cause.

On Dec. 6, 7, 13 and 14 between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. people are invited to choose a Christmas tree at CEI and chop it down. They ask that in exchange, people donate the cost of the tree to the institute.

“It is part of our heritage to go down and cut down a Christmas tree, so we’re reviving an old time family event,” said Nora Schmidt with CEI. “You get some high boots, some warm clothes on and go for a walk and find a tree.”

Schmidt said to remember to bring your own tools to chop the tree down.

She said the money that people donate would be put towards the CEI and helping them with rescuing injured or orphaned wildlife and contributing to native pasture improvement.

According to their website, the CEI is devoted to the preservation of North America’s biodiversity through the conservation and breeding of endangered indigenous species, environmental impact evaluation, rescue and rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned wildlife, public education and much more.

The CEI is located at 51061 Township Road 280 and for more information on the organization or the event call 403-932-5632.
