CHS' Justice Evening to shine light on global issues

A Grade 10 French class from Cochrane High School will be bringing global issues to the forefront with their first ever Justice Evening Nov. 25.

A Grade 10 French class from Cochrane High School will be bringing global issues to the forefront with their first ever Justice Evening Nov. 25.

The event will feature projects from around 30 students on topics such as domestic violence, child soldiers, poverty and difficult living conditions in Third World countries.

“We thought it would be a good idea to display our projects and knowledge at a night where all of the parents, other students and anyone who wants to come can see what we’ve done,” said student Sydney Green, who is part of the class.

She said that each student chose a global issue and wrote a poem about it and also completed a visual art project.

Green explained that the event would be set up like a fair with student projects displayed at various areas and the students would be there to explain their project and answer questions.

“It’s going to be really fun, and it would be awesome if we could have as many people as we can come out,” Green said.

Human trafficking was the topic Green chose and she said she has learned a lot about the topic, mainly focusing on Thailand.

Green has created a sculpture that will display the harshness of the problem with the visual of a woman’s face and how it affects her.

“We have such amazing lives here, we need people to know what else is going on,” explained Green. “It really helps everyone to get to know how lucky we really are.”

The event will also be raising money for World Vision, an organization that is dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice in nearly 100 countries.

Green said they would be accepting donations at the door and would be having a bake sale with proceeds going to the charity. They will also be selling T-shirts that some of the students designed with proceeds also going to World Vision.
