CHS play 'Siri-Ously?!' marks 50th

With the 50th anniversary of the Cochrane High School (CHS) just around the corner, it seemed fitting that the school celebrates the milestone by exploring the past, present and future.

With the 50th anniversary of the Cochrane High School (CHS) just around the corner, it seemed fitting that the school celebrates the milestone by exploring the past, present and future.

Together, students in the drama and performing arts programs created SiriOusly?!, a musical review that aims to take the audience on a comedic journey — smartphone style, said April LaBine, the music teacher at CHS.

“It’s a first time for CHS to write and produce its own production," said LaBine. "It's a nice way to celebrate our 50th birthday. The musical actually includes a scene in 1963, which is the year the school first opened. The script brings back the names of people and teachers who were around the area at that time. I think audience members will even recognize some of them."

SiriOusly?! sees a group of present-day students who become stuck in a time warp they accessed through Siri, the iPhone assistant. Siri takes the characters, and the audience, on a musical adventure from the ‘60s through the 2000s.

Students had creative control over the entire show, said LaBine, from writing and directing, to costume design, choreography and choosing songs.

The musical plays at Cochrane High School’s Lyceum Theatre at 7 p.m. from Dec.6-8. The price of admission is $10 for adults, and $7 for students and children under 12. All proceeds go to the performing arts program at the school.
