O Canada! An anthem that once seemed so far away, is beginning to sound oh so close. On Sunday, Aug. 25, the Cochrane Alliance Church will hold a citizenship ceremony to welcome new can-EH-dians.

The ceremony is being organized and hosted by The Helping Hands Society and Newcomers Cochrane.

"This year we will have five Cochrane families that will be participating in the citizenship ceremony," said Sandra Scott, programs manager at Helping Hands Society of Cochrane and Area. Since 2007, Helping Hands has played a big part in the community by linking volunteers to those who need help, whether it be single parents, chronically ill or newcomers trying to integrate into society.

Taking the oath is the last and final step in becoming a Canadian citizen and those attending will have a little taste of the town of Cochrane. From the big comfortable chairs they will be sitting on, to the welcome to Canada packages, there's no doubt that all will feel right at home.

There are two citizen ceremonies held each year in Cochrane. Last year was the first time the event was held at the Cochrane Alliance Church. "The venue was great, so I think going forward it will be held there," said Scott.

The ceremony will be from 1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m.
