When Academy Award nominees miss out on the big golden statue known as Oscar, they usually say it is just an honour to be nominated. That is probably because even though they don’t win, they still get what is referred to as a ‘swag bag’ filled with thousands of dollars worth of products. Last year’s bag alone was estimated at being worth $85,000.

This year, a local Cochrane company, Life Choice Ltd., will have two products included in the famous bag.

“I come from film, so I am always thinking in that kind of realm,” said Leslie McMichael, sales and marketing manager for Life Choice.

McMichael also used to be a professional stuntwoman for over a decade, and her husband Steve McMichael is a stuntman and was the sword master in The Hobbit series.

Life Choice was founded in 1986 with ‘a commitment to provide the natural health industry and its clientele with supplements of the finest quality.’ McMichael described it as a nutraceutical company with very unique products that are manufactured almost entirely in Canada.

Their products are located in stores all over Canada, including Grand Avenue Pharmacy in Cochrane.

“I thought it would be something different that I don’t think any of our competitors are doing,” said McMichael. “I think a lot of people in Hollywood are looking for alternatives that are healthier and that can get them to where they want to be without having pharmaceutical drugs and all of the negative side affects.”

Not only will the products be given to nominees at the awards, but the bags are also sent to magazine publishers who get to have a look and report on the ‘swag’ as well.

The two Life Choice products that will be included are their DMAE Restorative Cream and homeopathic HgH+ (human growth hormone), both of which are organic and non-GMO (genetically modified organisms).

McMichael said the restorative cream is a professional grade pharmaceutical cream that a naturopathic doctor (ND) would prescribe to people trying to get rid of scars or wrinkles.

The homeopathic HGH doesn’t actually have human growth hormone in it, according to McMichael, but actually helps the body produce it.

HGH has a lot of benefits, including improved muscular strength, endurance, skin tone and texture, disappearance of wrinkles, new hair growth, greater immune response and more.

“Your body doesn’t produce it after age 40 so it is one of those things that NDs are prescribing to patients that are having difficulty with any of those kind of things. There is a whole book written on it,” she said.

You can catch the 87th Academy Awards Feb. 22.
