Cochrane doctor appealing permit cancellation

Cochrane family physician Dr. Habeeb Tunde Ali will be back in court this Friday to appeal the cancellation of his practice permit by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

Cochrane family physician Dr. Habeeb Tunde Ali will be back in court this Friday to appeal the cancellation of his practice permit by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

The CPSA claims Ali failed to pay outstanding fees for his unprofessional conduct conviction that occurred in 2014 and they have cancelled his Alberta practice permit in response. There were three charges laid against him in 2014: failure to pay annual fees to the CPSA, failure to cooperate and meet with the CPSA’s Continuing Care Agreement, and failure to comply with his obligations as a bankrupt person.

Ali unsuccessfully appealed the decision to the CPSA’s Council in May of 2016 as well as the Alberta Court of Appeal in December 2017. The Alberta Court of Appeal granted Ali a stay of permit cancellation in spring of 2018 to allow him to appeal the costs to the Supreme Court of Canada.

The court’s decline of Dr. Ali’s appeal on March 14 resulted in an immediate cancellation of his practice permit by the CPSA. Ali believes he was not given sufficient time after the Supreme Court decision to pay the fee. Ali’s patients are encouraged to contact the Oasis Medical Clinic, where Dr. Ali practiced, to be referred to another physician in the clinic.

Patients can also contact the Calgary Foothills Primary Care Network at 403-284-3726, contact Health Link online at albertahealtservices.ca, or by dialing 811 to be directed to a physician accepting patients in the area.
