Following a short campaign and an outpouring of community support, members of Cochrane Fire Services were pleased to donate four truckloads of food to the Calgary Veteran’s Food Bank last Friday.

“It is fantastic – when you do these events sometimes you are not 100 per cent sure how they will turn out but I am always confident with Cochrane and the residents’ support,” said Dave Levisky, senior firefighter for Cochrane.

The Cochrane Firefighters Association entered a friendly fundraising competition in early November with Airdrie, and Kananaskis Fire Services to see how much could be raised for the Veteran’s Food Bank.

After announcing the competition on social media, community support poured in, and the firefighters making special mention of Alpha Construction, Winter Photographics, and artist MJ Stead for their “generous cash donations.”

Levisky said originally he would have been grateful with one pickup truck full of food but was happy when the two-and-a-half week campaign ended with four pickup trucks full of food and $1,600 in cash donations.

“It was fantastic. It gives you a great feeling to know the community came together to help our veterans – it’s a really nice way to start the Christmas season,” Levisky said.
