The Helping Hampers campaign hosted by Cochrane High School kicks-off next week. This is the third year the campaign will run, with five families nominated to receive hampers.

“We (usually) have two car loads of stuff for each family – it is like a big Christmas when it gets delivered,” said organizer Lisa Gordon Reece.

The campaign runs Nov. 23-Dec. 4 with donations to be collected and accepted at Cochrane High. The program was started through another leadership program, GeoMeer, in Edmonton.

“What they found is kids were leaving high school and not having volunteer opportunities, so they created this volunteer group for (the students) to volunteer for in high school,” Gordon Reece said.

Helping Hampers also helps families in need.

The school will be collecting food items, household cleaning supplies and gifts. Every grade is designated a family and every class will receive a list of donations to collect.

“We raise enough food, household products and gifts for the families for three months,” Gordon Reece said.

Organizers say any gift cards from businesses would be greatly appreciated. And collectors are seeking toys or books for younger kids.

“The students run the campaign – it is a great campaign and it gets the entire school involved,” Gordon Reece said.
