The Association of Mexicans in Calgary, a group that works to support migrant workers and advocates for migrant justice in Alberta, will be visiting a farm in Southern Alberta on Sunday (July 5).

COCHRANITE ENCOURAGES COMMUNITY TO DONATE TO ESSENTIAL FARM WORKERS

The Association of Mexicans in Calgary, a group that works to support migrant workers and advocates for migrant justice in Alberta, will be visiting a farm in Southern Alberta, on Sunday (July 5). The association has been fundraising for 17 migrant agricultural workers who perform “important and essential labour” on the farm, said Cochranite and Community Outreach Officer with the Association of Mexicans in Calgary Vanesa Ortiz. The association is also asking for support from the community in the form of donations of essential items, like soap, shampoo razors, toothpaste and toothbrushes, as well as masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, men’s clothing, and snacks.

STOCKMEN'S REOPENS TO THE PUBLIC

The Stockmen’s Memorial Foundation has announced that it will be opening the doors to the Bert Shepherd Library and Archives on Tuesday (July 7). The organization says it will be implementing new procedures to ensure the health and safety of all staff, volunteers and visitors in response to COVID-19. The social distancing recommendation of two metres will be observed, and hand sanitizer will be available on site. Visitors are welcome to wear masks, but they are not mandatory at this time. A maximum of 15 people will be allowed inside at any one time. Summer hours will be Tuesdays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

LOVE IS LOUDER OPENS FREE DIVERSITY LIBRARY

Local Usborne Books Consultant Niki McLaren announced on Facebook that she has partnered with Love is Louder Cochrane, a Cochrane-based anti-bullying group made up of local mothers. Earlier this month, Love is Louder Cochrane announced the opening of a free-to-use Diversity Library with books about black people and black history, Indigenous history and people, and the LGBT community. Pick-up of books from the Diversity Library can be arranged by sending a message to the Love is Louder Cochrane Facebook page. A portion of proceeds on purchases made through the link usbornebooksathome.ca/parties/1479 will be donated to Love is Louder Cochrane for the purchase of more diverse books for the lending library.
