Cochrane in Brief

BLOCK PARTY

The Town of Cochrane is encouraging residents to plan and host block parties this fall. Cochrane Family and Community Support Services, with support from Mackay’s and Two Pharmacy, is offering free ice cream and PPE kits to help make the event's fun and safe. Cochrane Family and Community Support Services manager Kim Karwec said the events are a fun way to encourage strong relationships between neighbours, which is an easy method of enhancing community safety and awareness. The PPE kits and ice cream are available to the first 20 residents who sign up at Cochrane.ca/neighbours/.

JACK TENNANT MEMORIAL BRIDGE UPDATE

Construction of the Jack Tennant Memorial Bridge, which will connect the west end of Griffin Rd. to the Riversong neighbourhood, is on schedule and expected to open this fall. In a video announcement released by the Town, mayor Jeff Genung called the bridge a multi-modal transportation corridor, that will accommodate vehicles, foot and bicycle traffic across the Bow River. The bridge will be complete with a lookout point that will allow foot traffic to stop and take in the view mid-bridge. The bridge is named for the Cochrane Eagle founder and long-time publisher, and former Calgary Sun and Herald columnist, Jack Tennant, who died in May 2018.

WILDFIRE

A wildfire raging north of Canmore and northwest of Cochrane was tempered by the recent rains and cool weather in the area. As of Monday (Sept. 7), the wildfire was noted to be burning around 676 hectares of land north of Banff National Park and is not anticipated to grow beyond its current boundaries, according to an update from the Municipal District of Bighorn. Although the recent rains have dampened things a bit, there is still a fire advisory in effect for the Town of Cochrane as of  10:30 a.m. Monday. Open fires are allowed, but residents are reminded to be extra vigilant.
