Cochrane Light Up organizers are “disappointed” with the low attendance numbers from the two-day festival last weekend.

“I am super proud of the event we created and super disappointed more didn’t come out today,” read a Facebook post from the official Cochrane Light Up page.

“Unfortunately without financial support from this event I am not sure where it leaves (Christmas) Light Up … for two volunteers it is a ton of work and if hardly anyone comes out, we wonder why bother.”

The same core group of volunteers who host the annual Cochrane Light Up in December hosted the two-day festival at the historic Cochrane Ranche site.

The festival hosted the latest Star Wars movies, Darth Vadar battles, costume contests, an orchestra, art, games and a photo booth on the first day; and taiko drummers, art, pony rides, mini golf, games, costumed princesses/superheroes, face painting, temporary tattoos and wood carving all day on the second day.

“It’s not because (there) was low attendance that would cause light up to be cancelled it is lack of money,” a comment on the official Facebook page read.

“This event was supposed to help pad the next one financially. We have two large-scale events to put on but will need to collect around $65,000 for that to happen, unfortunately when events are free we still have to pay.”

Now the organizers are drafting up packages for Xmas Light Up and the holiday Parade of Lights to determine by Sept. 15 if the event will be viable.

“If you would like to sponsor money or be involved by donating in-kind items for auction or to pull off this event we want to hear from you,” another Light Up Facebook post stated.

“This year money will be tight and no money means no event.”
