Cochrane Lions Rodeo turns 50

The Cochrane Lions Rodeo is celebrating its 50th anniversary during the Labour Day weekend. To kick off the weekend, the rodeo sponsor Slimdor Contracting Ltd. will be hosting the free-admission Ranch Rodeo on Sept. 2 at 4:00 p.m.

To kick off the weekend, the rodeo sponsor Slimdor Contracting Ltd. will be hosting the free-admission Ranch Rodeo on Sept. 2 at 4:00 p.m. at the Cochrane Lions Rodeo Grounds. Following the rodeo will be Legacy Night at 8:00 p.m. at the Legacy Guitar House featuring performances by Tim Huss and Ridley Benn.

The Cochrane Lions Rodeo will begin on Sept. 3 and run until Sept. 5. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and youth, and free for children under 12 years of age.

The Lions will be hosting a pancake breakfast at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 3 and 4 at the grounds. The gates will open at 10:00 a.m. on Sept. 5 and each day the rodeo will start at 1:00 p.m. Food trucks will be on the grounds during the rodeo weekend.

The rodeo will consist of bareback riding, calf roping, novice horse riding, breakaway roping, steer riding, steer wrestling, junior bull riding, trick riders during intermission, lady barrel racing, junior barrel racing, peewee barrel racing, saddlebroncs, novice horse riding, wild pony racing, mutton busting for children, a wild cow race, and bull riding.

The Cochrane Toyota is sponsoring the Toyota festival tent under which will be a market place and silent auction and a family fun zone during the day. On Sept. 3, an adults-only rodeo dance will be hosted under the tent with live performers and a bar starting at 8:00 p.m.

On Sept. 3, there will be an all-ages dance from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. under the Toyota festival tent featuring a local DJ. From 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. will be an adult-only cabaret with an open bar, local vendors and performances from Prairies Edgle, Steelhawk, and Netty Mac.

On Sept. 4, the Toyota festival tent will host Cowboy Church at 10:00 a.m. There will also be a volunteer and sponsor appreciation dinner hosted at 6:00 p.m. under the tent. The Lions will be holding a fireworks celebration at 8:00 p.m. that night at the grounds, weather dependent.

Following the Cochrane Labour Day Parade, the rodeo finals will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sept. 5 to determine winners of the Championship Buckles as well as Class Champion. The marketplace will open at noon that day under the Toyota festival tent.
