Cochrane poppy campaign to break record

Donations for this year’s Poppy Campaign are looking to exceed last year’s. “I’m very optimistic we will exceed 2015 donations – and last year was a record year for us,” said Usherwood, campaign chair, referring to this year’s campaign as “amazing.

Donations for this year’s Poppy Campaign are looking to exceed last year’s.

“I’m very optimistic we will exceed 2015 donations – and last year was a record year for us,” said Usherwood, campaign chair, referring to this year’s campaign as “amazing.”

According to Dave Usherwood, first vice-president of the Cochrane Legion, donations-to-date for the 2016 Poppy Campaign rang in at $44,481, with funds still coming in.

The 2015 campaign donations came in at $39,000 and the total for the year was $46,188.

While the legion win may come as a surprise in the face of an economic downturn, Usherwood attributes the success of the campaign to increased publicity, awareness of the challenges faced by veterans young and old and the good weather that has had people out and about, donating extra change to purchase poppies.

The legion will be making a $4,000 donation to STARS for medical equipment and training from 2015 funds.
