Cochrane Rotary Club takes part in Adventures in Citizenship program

The Rotary Club of Cochrane is once again adding the Adventures in Citizenship program to their list of sponsored youth programs this coming year.

The Rotary Club of Cochrane is once again adding the Adventures in Citizenship program to their list of sponsored youth programs this coming year.

One Cochrane high school student will be selected in the next few weeks to join a group of young Canadians, sponsored by Rotary Clubs across the country, to take part in a four-day event in Ottawa – to meet with political leaders, senior officials and tour the nation’s capital May 4-7, 2014.

“The student will be selected from one of the Cochrane area high schools in the next few weeks. We’ve submitted our application and the necessary fees to hold the spot. The club will cover the costs of the flight, the registration and the program speaks for itself,” said Rotary Club member, Julian deCocq.

A strong advocate for the advancement of youth and youth programs, the Rotary Club of Cochrane sponsors a variety of local awards and bursaries, including the Rotary Youth Leadership Award and the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment, among others.

Club president, Tom Wilk, said that while the service club has had a number of different goals over the years, a focus on youth remains a priority.

“Youth are our future leaders, both in our communities and in Rotary, and it is important to support their personal and professional development as well as their ongoing education,” said Wilk.

“Youth selected for the Adventures in Citizenship program will gain a better understanding of the workings of our government through this four-day program, which takes place in Ottawa at the government offices. Students will get the opportunity to meet with political leaders and senior officials, tour the city, interact with others and participate on discussions on social engagement, importance of voting, human rights and other topics,” explained Wilk.

The 2012 selected student was Zachary Biech of Springbank Community High School.
