Excel Homes recently commemorated its 10,000th new home and 26th anniversary in a big way in Cochrane.

On Sept. 11, Barrett Budgell pulled up to his newly-purchased home in the Heartland community with his parents and saw a big red ribbon around it.

“My mom and dad were visiting and I initially thought they might have something to do with the ribbon, but then I realized it was much more than that,” said Budgell.

The single father of two had purchased the 10,000th home built by Excel, and to celebrate they gave him a brand new backyard featuring a sodded lawn, fencing, a deck, a stainless steel barbecue and a brand new children’s play-set.

On top of that, representatives from Excel presented Budgell with a cheque for $10,000 towards his sons’ education.

“It really took me by surprise, and when I realized the magnitude of what was going on there, it was exceptional and just mind-blowing,” said Budgell. “I was kind of in shock.”

You can see the shock online, as the whole thing was captured on video and can be viewed on YouTube.

“I feel that one of our big mandates is to give back wherever possible. We do that wherever we can,” said Curt Woodhall, vice president of sales, marketing and product development for Excel Homes. He added that this couldn’t have happened to a better guy than Budgell. Excel Homes is also celebrating its 26th anniversary by offering a $2,600 credit towards options and upgrades on all new home sales, and they’re also giving away $10,000 via a Facebook contest that launched Sept. 12.
