Get ready for a night of mystery, intrigue and laughter at the 5th annual Boys and Girls Club of Cochrane and Area Comedy Classic.

“It is an important evening for us. Everyone that comes will have a lot of fun and really enjoy themselves,” said manager of administration and operations for the Boys and Girls Club of Cochrane and Area Jenny Strickland. “Just come out and enjoy the evening and the entertainment.”

Strickland said that this year the theme of the event, which takes place Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at the RancheHouse, is to enter the world of espionage, and people are invited to dress up as their favourite secret agent, spy or evil villain.

She said they felt the theme was a good fit with their comedian for the night, Gery Schubert, who is known for his impressions of Austin Powers and Jack Sparrow.

Strickland said Schubert is a very popular comedian and they were delighted to have him for their event.

“We felt that it would be a really good fit in terms of the mission from headquarters, being the mission of the Boys and Girls Club,” said Strickland, explaining that the mission of the evening is raising funds for children, youth and families in the community.

“That is what the evening is about. Having fun and raising dollars to help support all of the programs that we offer throughout the year both in clubs and in the school programs,” she said.

The fundraising goal for this year is $30,000, said Strickland, who added that last year they had raised $25,000. They have two major fundraisers each year, the Comedy Classic and the Race for Kids, which happens in June.

She said a lot of the programs they offer at the club are free, so the funds from these events are necessary to keep them going.

“It is a big part of what we do every year, maintaining our current capacity, as well as to give us the option to be able to continue to meet the growing needs of the community,” she said.

Strickland said there would be a cash bar, hors d’oeuvres, a live and silent auction and a raffle for two tickets anywhere WestJet flies.

Some of the items available in the auction are overnight accommodations at the Fairmont Banff Springs, gift baskets from local businesses, salon gift certificates, passes for summer camps from the Boys and Girls Club, Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre passes and much more.

Tickets are $75 and are available at the Boys & Girls Club administration office located at 2209 - 2nd Floor, 120 5th Ave West, (above Classic Nails and Mehtab). For more information contact Strickland at 403-932-4747 ext 25.
