Community groups receive $160,000

The Town of Cochrane, the town’s Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), and United Way have approved $160,778 in grant funding for local organizations.

The Town of Cochrane, the town’s Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), and United Way have approved $160,778 in grant funding for local organizations.

Overall, 33 organizations applied for grant funding through either the town, the FCSS, or United Way. The applications were assessed by advisory boards and the town’s administration to determine funding allotted, then council voted to approve the funding on May 24.

Funding available to the FCSS this year for grants totalled $50,000 while the United Way was allocated $70,000. The organizations received a total of 17 applications, of which 12 were granted funding by council based off the organizations’ recommendations.

According to a report presented to council, FCSS distributed $44,000 of what it was allocated. Susan Flowers, manager of the FCSS and social planning, said some applications did not meet their mandate.

The FCSS and United Way also referenced a number of programs that applied for funding that did not meet their mandate or that they intend to help in another way.

The town received 21 grant applications for the $50,000 it had available this year, of which all were given a certain amount of funding.

Suzanne Gaida, the senior manager of community services with the town, explained the grants could only cover half of the cost of the project, which resulted in some organizations not receiving the full amount requested.

After the applications were assessed, administration recommended the town distribute $46,778 of the grant money to the organizations that applied.
