Camping Season Extended

Campers have another month to enjoy the outdoors, as warm fall weather and a demand for late-season camping have convinced Alberta Parks to extend the camping season into October.

This year, the province of Alberta recorded nearly 159,000 bookings in provincial parks up until Aug. 30 – an increase of about five per cent over last year’s totals. Reservation numbers have continued to balloon for eight years in a row.

In response to continued camping popularity, Alberta Parks will keep as many as 274 leisure areas open for at least another four weeks. Across the province, 37 campgrounds remain open year round.

When they do close for the season, some campgrounds will receive improvements before the 2018 season begins, as part of the government’s recent $239 million commitment to upgrades.

Boulton Creek and Bow River campgrounds in the Kananaskis area will each be expanding their layouts to include as many as 30 new and serviced RV sites.

Riders take to the road for Cancervive

Cyclists will ride nearly 600 kilometres next week as part of the annual Cancervive Cycle Tour.

Beginning on Sept. 12 and continuing until Sept.17, 40 participants – including several from Cochrane and area – will cycle for six days through Banff National Park to Calgary to raise money for Wellspring Calgary and Wellspring Edmonton, non-profit organizations that supports families affected by cancer.

So far, the tour has collected more than $2.2 million for Wellspring. The goal for 2017 is to bring in another $90,000.

On the last day of the ride, mini-tour rides from Cochrane to Calgary or from Bowness Park to Montgomery Communitre Centre will also take place. The mini-tours are free of charge for Wellspring members and youth under 18 years old.

Animal Rescue Tour

Bear Valley Rescue is inviting people who love animals to tour its centre and meet some of the 150 horses and other animals in their care.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 9, owners Kathy and Mike Bartley will open their 40-acre land where visitors can participate in farm tours, a bake sale, a tack sale and more. The horse rescue has been operating since 2004 and rabbits, chickens, pigs, goats llamas and cows also live on the farm.

Saturday’s event is open to the public (except dogs) and is free of charge. For more info, visit bearvalleyab.org.

Dunk tanking turns

Would you take a turn at dunking the mayor? A player for the Generals? A marathon man or local business owner? How about the editor of the Cochrane Eagle?

This weekend boasts a line-up of dunk tank participants you can saturate on Saturday or Sunday at the new Jayman BUILT aquatic centre. Three balls for $5 or seven balls for $10 with all proceeds going to Rock the Waves.
