Alberta’s coyote population has been a hot topic this year, and the Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park Foundation’s (GRPF) first ‘Park Talk’ of the year will focus on the animal.

‘Lessons from Coyote’ will take place Jan. 27 and feature Shelley Alexander, who is an assistant professor of geography at the University of Calgary. GRPF said her current research serves as the most ‘comprehensive study of contemporary urban coyote issues in Canada.’

According to the government of Alberta’s Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, the coyote has survived ‘repeated attempts to eliminate it’ and has been able to ‘adapt to many of the changes brought about by man.’

GRPF pointed out that one coyote is killed every minute of every year in the U.S. and that kill rates in Canada are not far behind.

Tickets to the talk are $5, but GRPF members and volunteers get in free; pre-registration is required. The talk will run from 7 – 8:30 p.m. at the Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park visitor information center. For more info visit grpf.ca/events.

Rocky View Schools Community Learning (RVSCL) is now supporting GRPF workshops that provide ‘practical, skill building workshops for non-profits and small businesses at an affordable rate.’

“The ‘In The Trenches’ workshop series has been a great success,” said Tara McFadden, GRPF community engagement officer.

The workshops are provided through community-based partnerships with Rocky View Schools, Community Futures Centre West, Bow Valley College, Calgary Regional Partnership and GRPF.

There are three workshops scheduled for this year, including ‘Building Your Business Plan’ Jan. 23, ‘Sustainable Tourism’ March 13 and the latest, which has been added to the series through the partnership with RVSCL, ‘Budgeting Basics for Non-Profits’, which will be held Feb. 13.

The workshops are $95 and include lunch. For more information visit grpf.ca.
