CrossFit has jumped into new location.

The fitness movement that started three months ago in a three-car garage will now be moving to a prominent spot in Cochrane.

CrossFit Cochrane is moving into the former Dodge dealership, located on the lot at Railway St. and Fifth Ave.

“I think the new location has an interesting twist – we are really honoured to be able to set up there,” said Joe Cowie, owner and operator of CrossFit Cochrane.

Cowie opened CrossFit Cochrane late September in a three-car garage called the “garage box” where members went to train. Months later, the membership has increased to the point where the owner had to look into a larger retail space.

The owner said his fitness space has more of a small-town feel, as CrossFit gyms are not corporate owned – giving the owner the choice for space, decorative options and class selection.

“A lot of CrossFit starts in an organic setting and they grow because of the community – it’s been phenomenal,” Cowie said.

“It is that ‘small-town Cochrane’ and I really like being a part of it.”

The fitness movement that has been moving through Canada is what local instructors describe as a “high-intense, full-functional exercise.”

“It is always changing,” Cowie explained.

“We are constantly tricking the body not to get into a routine – everything that we do is putting your system into a little state of confusion and that is where we are seeing huge results.”

Cowie has participated in multiple CrossFit competitions and events, and obtained his Level 1 CrossFit Training certificate, the Olympic Lifting CrossFit certificate and the CrossFit Kids certificate.

“The biggest thing I want to get across to people is there tends to be a feeling that ‘I can’t do CrossFit unless I am already fit,’ which is complete baloney. CrossFit is to get people fit and what people need to understand, it doesn’t matter what level you are – I have clients in their late fifties and early twenties in the same class together.”

The new location will offer five classes from Monday to Friday and two classes on the weekend.

The owner is also looking into offering childcare for week-day morning classes but is still finalizing the details.

“We are putting everything on hold until we physically move,” Cowie said.

“We’ve only been open for three months and it has gotten huge already.”

The new CrossFit Cochrane will be opening soon, located at 544 Railway St. W.
