A man has been arrested and charged with nine criminal code charges after police responded to reports of someone drunkenly wielding a sword.

Scott Nelson Bigcrow, 33, from Tsuut’ina has been charged with uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, mischief under $5,000, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of failure to comply with an undertaking, and three counts of failure to comply with a probation order – after wielding a sword, claiming to have guns and threatening to shoot the police Monday morning.

On Aug. 14, Tsuut’ina Nation Police informed Cochrane RCMP about a disturbance with a male believed to be travelling to Stoney Nakoda First Nation. Officers were dispatched at approximately 3:30 a.m. to Stoney for a disturbance involving the Tsuut’ina suspect after a report came in about the suspect who was believed to be “highly intoxicated.”

The complaint stated the suspect was carrying a sword, claimed to have guns and other weapons, and began slashing the tires of the complainants’ vehicle and threatening to shoot the police if they attended. The suspect then fled into the woods near the residence with another male suspect.

The Cochrane RCMP with the assistance of the Police Dog Service (PDS) and the K-Division Emergency Response Team South responded.

One of the male suspects came out of the woods voluntarily, was taken into custody and later released.

The initial suspect, Bigcrow, exited after staying hidden for a while but failed to comply with police directions and a police service dog was deployed to apprehend him. Bigcrow was treated for minor injuries and remains in custody until his court date on Aug. 19.
