Once again, the Kimmett Cup was a huge success!

The eighth annual memorial pond hockey tournament brought 52 teams to the ice and a smile to everyone’s face. According to Jason Baserman, co-chair of the tournament, one of the highlights of the day was “Wish Child and cancer survivor Kypton scoring his first goal and playing in his first hockey game.”

This year’s Kimmett Cup Ambassador through the Children’s Wish Foundation was Ryan, a 16-year-old hockey fanatic. He was captain of “The Wish Heroes,” a team “comprised of his Wish family and other Children’s Wish kids and families.”

Baserman accounts Ryan “led the (team) to an impressive round-robin finish and is (now) excited to head to the Hockey All-Star Game” happening in Nashville, Tenn., at the end of January. Attending the game was Ryan’s wish.

Despite the economic downturn, the community showed tremendous support for the two foundations partnering with the event.

“(At the event) likely nearly $120,000 was raised for Children’s Wish Foundation and close to $8,000 was raised for the Helping Families Handle Cancer Foundation,” Baserman said.

The tournament is held in memory of Lindsay Leigh Kimmett, a Cochrane resident who tragically passed away in 2008.
