The process of transferring a parcel of land in Sunset Ridge that was deemed as being unsuitable for development due to significant slopes and stability issues into the hands of the Town of Cochrane has commenced.

The sloped area of land, which is located in the south portion of Sunset’s initial stage of development, east of St. Timothy High School, was shown as being ‘major escarpment open space’ in the Sunset Ridge Area Structure Plan (ASP) in 2005. The town and then developer Tirion Properties then agreed that the land would be transferred back to the town to be designated as environmental reserve.

In 2011, when Tirion sold remaining undeveloped portions of Sunset Ridge to a new developer, Melcor, the ASP was amended, with the parcel in question continuing to be designated as environmental reserve.

Tirion has since contacted the town to begin the transfer of ownership of the land back into the hands of the town.

A public hearing to discuss any concerns regarding this transfer of land is scheduled for Feb. 23 in council chambers at the RancheHouse.
