Expect to see higher traffic volumes over the Labour Day long weekend

Pay attention to the rules of the road and your surroundings over the September long weekend to ensure safe travels.

It's the last long weekend before everyone gets back into their regular fall routines. Alberta RCMP is reminding motorists to exercise caution when hitting the roads over the weekend.

"Last Labour Day long weekend, Alberta RCMP responded to 354 motor vehicle collisions which resulted in four fatalities and 44 injuries," said Supt. Gary Graham, Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. "Traffic safety is a shared responsibility. This long weekend, when you're on the road, always follow the posted speed limit and never operate a vehicle while under the influence of drugs, alcohol or while fatigued."

With increased traffic on the roads, Alberta RCMP encourages drivers to pay attention to road signage, know speed limits, not to follow too closely on highways and to slow down while in construction zones.

If you are heading into Calgary instead of the mountains be prepared to face some delays as long weekends are known as a prime time for road projects. Expect to see slow-moving traffic on Crowchild and Glenmore and major road closures in the downtown area on Sunday from 5 a.m to 3 p.m while the Calgary Pride Parade takes place.

Also, remember the Cochrane Labour Day Parade kicks off Monday morning. No parking signs have already popped up along the parade route and road closures will begin in the downtown Monday morning.
