A Rocky View County (RVC) home located west of Glendale Road on Township Road 262, northeast of Cochrane, was destroyed by fire Aug. 21 after an explosion ignited the structure.

RVC district fire chief Dax Huba said the initial investigation indicated that there was no suspicious or malicious act that caused the fire, and that the second stage of the investigation for insurance purposes does point toward a gas leak as being the culprit.

Huba said the explosion spread debris over a hundred feet from the home, and that RVC Fire Services were on scene for around six hours putting down the fire and conducting an overhaul of the structure to save what they could. No one was home when the blaze began.

Huba said that although it is extremely rare for these kinds of explosions to occur in county homes, it is ‘a really good idea’ for people to have their natural gas appliances inspected by a professional on a regular basis to avoid this type of tragedy from happening.
