It’ll be a show of grit and stamina at the Ag Society June 14, as racers get down and dirty for the Mudd, Sweat and Tears extreme obstacle race.

The course will run over eight kilometres of varying terrain at the Cochrane and District Agricultural Society. The first wave of tough racers will be set loose on the course at 9 a.m., tackling the mud pits, climbing walls and battling natural obstacles all the way to the finish line.

“We picked a fantastic location for our first race in Alberta,” said John Reed, race director. “There’s a variety of different terrain, the course is open and accessible, and the proximity to Calgary is a bonus.”

Mudd, Sweat and Tears, which is based out of British Columbia, first started challenging participants in 2013, running a series of four races. This year, seven events will run across Canada.

The event is open to those 14 years and older. It is recommended participants be of average or above average fitness levels. About 90 per cent of racers train with the extreme obstacle race in mind, said Reed.

Reed said about 550 racers have already registered for the event — but there is room for a few more.

A portion of net proceeds from the race is donated to Breakfast Club of Canada, which provides nutritious breakfasts to children and youth in schools nationwide.

“(Mudd, Sweat and Tears) is pro-leadership and pro-opportunities for children and youth,” said Reed. “We want to help to fuel those minds.”
