February a busy month for Seniors on the Bow

Snowbirds have flown south to warmer climes while chickadees and hardy folk have remained behind to enjoy crisp air and snow diamonds winking in the sun. Seniors on the Bow (SOTB) has more than enough activities to keep senior stay-at-homes entertained.

Monday movie matinees at 1:15 p.m. for January and February are:

Jan. 25 – Learning to Drive, the comedy-drama of a writer and her Sikh driving instructor who are both experiencing marriage problems.

Feb.1 – The Second Mother, a comedy with sub-titles that deals with class barriers.

Feb. 8 – Mission Impossible, an action adventure-thriller where the team attempts to eradicate the “syndicate.”

Feb. 22 – Difret, a crime drama about a young lawyer who must deal with traditional abduction into marriage in Ethiopia.

Feb. 29 – Burnt, a drama concerning a chef who becomes involved with drugs and diva behaviour.

A self-defence workshop is scheduled for Jan. 28 at 1:30 p.m. Nancy Spreadbury will lead a workshop on how to stay safe, an important skill for seniors.

Please note that the dance for Jan. 29 is cancelled.

The book club will meet to discuss Wild, by Cheryl Strayed, which was made into a movie. The book for February is Accidents of Marriage by Randy Susan Meyers. All readers welcome.

Special yoga workshops are planned for February. On Feb. 4, principles of movement goes from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Learn what yoga can do for your health and well being. It includes yoga therapy and breath work. The session is limited to 12 participants. Register at 403-851-2534.

From Feb.18-March 3 (Thursdays from 1:30-2:30 p.m.) there will be a gentle yoga therapy series teaching how to build a yoga practice from a relaxed and pain-free place. The session is limited to eight participants. Register at 403-851-2534.

Hymn sing resumes Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. Come join the happy crowd and sing praises of joy both old and new.

On Feb. 11 at 1:30 p.m., there will be an awareness-of-elder-abuse session. This is a half-hour presentation by Deirdre MacLean of Senior Services Division for Alberta Seniors.

February’s hot lunch will be served on the 19th at 12:30 p.m. For a mere $6 enjoy ham, scalloped potatoes, salad and strawberry shortcake. Register soon, because this popular event fills up fast.

Seniors on the Bow is open daily, Monday-Friday, from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m., except holidays. We will be closed Feb. 15 for Family Day.
