Friday Findings at Stockmen's Memorial

Robert (Bob) Prestage was dedicated to improving genetics, Canadian cattle and fostering relationships with international markets.

The hat of Mr. Robert Prestage.

Oh Friday, thank goodness you're here. We made it through another week and that means it's time for another Friday Find from Stockmen's Memorial Foundation coming your way.

This week, I bring you yet another hat selection. The hat of the strong-willed leader Robert (Bob) Prestage.

Back in 1953 Prestage purchased his first two cows. Although, at the time, the Angus breed wasn't very popular, that quickly changed as the Angus breed became a recognizable staple worldwide for its high marbling. This can be credited to Prestage and his progeny test program which improved the genetic pool of the Canadian cattle industry.

One of Prestage's fortes included forming relationships with plenty of industry leaders in different parts of the world. He selected, processed, and exported thousands of cattle to more than 20 countries. He was dominant in the field of marketing and this is how he raised the profile of Angus beef throughout Canada and internationally.

Another impressive element the man under the hat carried is he was a former reeve of Camrose County. Prestage was very much a community minded individual and received countless awards for his contributions.

On November. 28 in Quebec City, Prestage will be inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame. He was nominated by the Canadian Angus Association, very fitting seeing as he was an instrumental part of the beef industry.
