Well, it’s been more than a decade since we’ve seen gas prices this low.

Petro-Canada on River Avenue in Cochrane advertised 77.9 cents/litre Monday afternoon (Mar. 16). Local stations - as of Tuesday (Mar. 17) are hovering between 77.9 cents/litre and 85.9 cents/litre. The lowest price in the province was reported at Trailside Tempo in the hamlet of Walsh, Alta. off the Trans-Canada Highway near the Saskatchewan border.

Cochranites aren’t jumping for joy, nor is the rest of Alberta. Plummeting oil prices will negatively impact the province’s already struggling oil and gas sector. The price fall was triggered by a price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia and global fears on the spread of COVID-19.

Experts are predicting that the collapse could be the beginning of a global recession.
