The Block Party trailer will hit the streets this June?

Cochranites looking for a way to forge stronger connections with their neighbours might want to look to Cochrane Family and Community Support Services for some help getting the fun on.

This spring FCSS is launching its Block Party in a Box trailer with four pilot dates in June before it rolls out to the general public in an effort to create a community building resource.

The June events will be held in partnership with Cochrane community groups beginning June 1 in the East End at Centennial Park, the following dates are June 8 in Sunset Ridge at the park by the lake, June 22 in Heritage Hills and then June 29 in West Valley.

Deb Maxwell, community liaison and programmer, neighbourhood inclusion with FCSS, said the June block parties are bigger events than what the trailer is intended for when it opens to public bookings in July.

"It's not meant for gigantic parties, just you and your closest neighbours," said Maxwell, adding the program is aimed at creating a greater sense of community. "When you do know your neighbours it provides a sense of safety and security."

It is also a great way to make new friends and welcome newcomers to the area," she added.

The June pilot will coincide with Great Neighbours week, Cochrane's first annual celebration of community, which will kick off with the annual Kids Can Catch event at Mitford Pond on June 15. Kids Can Catch is a free family fishing day hosted by the town in partnership with Canadian Tire. The event is an opportunity for youth to learn angling tips as well as about conservation and water safety. Registration is required for this event and licences are a must for anglers between the ages of 16 and 65.

Throughout the rest of the week until June 22, Maxwell said residents are encouraged to plan activities such as barbecues, picnics, or an event at a local park to connect with their neighbours. There is also an opportunity to win a free block party by uploading photos of Great Neighbour Week activities to Instagram using hashtag #CochraneNeighbours.

This year the Block Party in a Box trailer will be available for one event each weekend through the summer, but Maxwell said the goal is to expand its availability in the future.

The trailer comes complete with invitations, signage, traffic cones, a griddle and detailed instructions on how to put on a great party. All party planners need to supply is propane and food. Maxwell added there might be need for a street permit depending on party locations.

Those interested in scheduling a neighbourhood block party and using the Block Party in a Box trailer can contact FCSS at 403-851-2250 to find out about upcoming availability.
