Gibson appeal denied

The Alberta Court of Appeal upheld the sentence handed down to Ryan Gibson, a Calgary man responsible for killing 17-year-old Cochrane youth, Brandon Thomas, on Dec. 6, 2012.

Gibson pleaded guilty in 2014 to driving over .08 causing death and driving over .08 causing bodily harm.

A provincial court judge delivered a 32-month sentence, despite the joint submission of a two-year prison term.

Gibson appealed the higher sentence.

Cochrane RCMP continue to seek public assistance in regards to an incident that resulted in break and entry and theft from the local Canada Post outfit Jan. 25.

Officers received a complaint at 1:50 a.m. that an unknown suspect(s) had broken into the front door of the business, located at 185 First Street East, broke into the display cases containing silver and gold coin collections and stole several of them.

The dollar value of the stolen items and damages were not available in time for deadline.

On Jan. 21, at around 3 a.m., Cochrane RCMP responded to a complaint that a break-in had occurred at High Country Framing, located at 119 First Avenue.

It is estimated that over $15,000 worth of paintings and bronze statues were stolen.

On Jan. 19 at around 2:50 a.m., two thieves were captured on video surveillance breaking into Home Quarter Mercantile Shoppe at 216 First Street West.

The thieves, who remain unidentified, were able to gain entry into the store through the front door, whereupon they broke into the main jewelry case.

According to Cochrane RCMP, ‘an undetermined amount of jewelry and bronze statues was stolen’.

Corp. Greg Stannard with the local detachment said that while it is too early in the investigations to confirm links between the three incidents, it appears there may be a connection.

Twenty-four year old Jeremy Doerksen of Regina, Sask. has been charged with ‘trafficking a controlled substance’ and will make his second appearance in Cochrane provincial court Feb. 17.

On Jan. 22, a concerned citizen reported what they observed to be an impaired driver to local RCMP. Officers located the vehicle and began a search that resulted in the discovery of 5.5 pounds of marijuana.

The street value of the drugs is $23,000.

The RCMP wished to thank the community for reporting the suspicious activity, resulting in Doerksen being charged.
