Girls have a night out

The girls will be out in Water Valley April 11 for Girls Night Out, an event in support of Global Wonders, held at the Water Valley Church Events Centre.

Being advertised as ‘socially conscious shopping,’ Girls Night Out will be selling jewelry through Global Wonders, a related business development of the Servant’s Anonymous (SA) Foundation.

According to the SA Foundation’s website, its goal is to advocate for and inspire social change, and by engaging people through events like this one they can make people aware of all the matters involving human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

The SA Foundation exists to develop and train leaders around the world to set up a long-term recovery program for survivors of sexual exploitation and their children, according to Naomi Holland from the SA Foundation.

The SA Foundation also supports projects in Kathmandu, Nepal, Budapest and Hungary. The foundation is based in Vancouver, which acts as a training ground, of which four teams are set to open across Europe next year, said Holland.

Global Wonders is a jewelry business that was founded on behalf of the Nepal project and is 100 per cent not-for-profit, with all the proceeds being reinvested in the SA Foundation’s global projects.

“(It gives) participants employable skills, fair trade income, and generates income for the Nepali project,” said Holland about Global Wonders.

Holland said while this event is of small scale, it is still very important to raise awareness. She needs help from communities to set up events like this one, and would like to see one in Cochrane in the near future.

“Sales are hosted by volunteers all over Western Canada,” said Holland. “Anyone can organize and host a sale, and the sale in Water Valley came about simply because one lady heard about our work caring for victims of human trafficking.”

While this event is sold out, anyone interested in Global Wonders or the SA Foundation’s work can visit their website at safoundation.com, or see the jewelry offered at safoundation.myshopify.com.

“Supporting this fair trade social enterprise allows Canadians a simple and practical way to join in the fight against sexual slavery and support women in their fight for freedom and dignity.”
