Glenbow Earth Day celebration tomorrow

Earth Day celebrations kick off tomorrow at Glenbow Elementary School.

Earth Day celebrations kick off tomorrow at Glenbow Elementary School.

On April 28, the elementary school will be involved in making “living homemade gardens” to take home while also working on their art projects for the upcoming Eco Art Show and Community Fair on May 11.

“Every day is kind of Earth Day at the school but this week we are doing something extra,” explained Brendan Trinca, the school’s principal.

During the morning students will be recycling by taking shredded paper, making their own homemade paper and sprinkling the seeds in their creations, resulting in a living garden to take home and plant. The seeds, donated by Anything Grows, are a variety of garden vegetables that Trinca said he thinks the students are excited about.

Classrooms will also be taking turns creating art for the upcoming show with each class having a theme.

“The kindergarten students will be making owls out of toilet paper rolls, the Grade 3 class will be making non-living recycled terrariums,” Trinca explained.

The art show and fair will be hosted by Friends of Glenbow, a fundraising society with the mission to enhance the education experience for students. This year the society was able to donate funds to assist in field trips for the students.

In addition to this week’s activities, the K-5 principal explained that the school tries to be environmentally conscious year round with recycling and compositing programs, while hosting a school and community garden.

Trinca said the community garden has been successful but noted that there are a lot of plots that are available for rent.

For more information on how to get a plot, email the organizers at [email protected].

The Eco Art Show and Community Fair will be hosted on May 11 at 6 p.m. at the elementary school, located at 55 Glenpatrick Rd.
