The Town of Cochrane will be hosting Kids Can Catch! at Mitford Ponds on June 18.

This free event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and allows kids and families the opportunity to fish with a community mentor. Participants can register for the event at cochrane.ca/eservices.

“We’re taking registrants up until Friday but people can drop in on the day off. But we’re encouraging people to preregister so we have an idea of who’s coming out,” said Christine Rezansoff, recreation programmer with the town.

People are welcome to bring their own fishing supplies but Canadian Tire and Alberta Fish & Wildlife, two of the event sponsors, will have rods and bait available for use. The event is for all ages but anyone between the ages of 16 and 64 must have attained a valid fishing license in advance.

“Kids will be paired with mentors that can help teach them how to fish. We have around 20 mentors so we’re pairing them up with five anglers to give the kids some hands on, one-on-one experience,” Rezansoff said.

The Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park staff will also be hosting a pond study during the event. Shoreliner Risers Guiding Company will be performing fly fishing demos as well.

Participants of the event can learn about water safety from the Town of Cochrane Aquatic Department and fish conservation from the Alberta Conservation Association and roaming entomology experts. The Cochrane FUN VAN will also be in attendance providing crafts and games.

Participants can enjoy snacks and refreshments thanks to Cochrane ATB Financial.

“It’s an opportunity to fish and learn some other information as well. There’ll be lots of stuff to take part in even when you’re not fishing,” Rezansoff said.
