Cochrane RCMP and Rocky View Fire responded to a call around 3 p.m March 9 of a grass fire in the community of Bearspaw.

A male individual was reported to have been burning papers due to a broken paper shredder. High winds blew the paper into the field near Nagway Road and Hwy 1A resulting in a grass fire, which was quickly contained by fire services.

Rocky View County bylaw officers are investigating the matter, which may result in laying charges on the man.

Cochrane RCMP have located Robert Donald (‘Donny’) Myers, who had been missing since the evening of March 8.

Myers was found at the Southeast Plaza Mall on Macleod Trail in Calgary around noon March 11.

The RCMP put out a call to the public March 10 for assistance finding Myers.

Myers, a developmentally delayed 21-year-old, was missing since 9 p.m., March 8 and last seen at his assisted living facility in Cochrane.

Foul play was never suspected, although it was described as ‘out of character’ for Myers to go missing. He had no cellphone and did not have any access to his money.

The Cochrane RCMP General Investigation Section had been assisting in the investigation, conducting door-to-door inquiries. Checks were also being conducted at Calgary drop-in centres, as Myers had been known to go to Calgary.

On March 11 around 7:20 p.m., the Cochrane Integrated Traffic Unit was conducting routine speed enforcement on Hwy 1, near the Hwy 40 exit, when a motorcyclist was clocked at 211 km/hr.

The posted speed in this location is 110 km/hr.

A 26-year-old Calgary male was stopped and arrested, released on charges of ‘exceeding the posted speed limit’ and ‘careless driving’ pursuant to the Traffic Safety Act.

He has a mandatory court date set for May 8 in Cochrane Provincial Court.

“Crashing at that speed would have been catastrophic for this individual, not to mention the lives of others put at risk,” said Sergeant Dave Hardy of the Cochrane Integrated Traffic in a recent press release.

“Fortunately, the integrated traffic officer was in the right place at the right time to prevent a tragedy.”

Cochrane RCMP and Rocky View Fire responded to a call on March 6 around 1:10 p.m. where it was reported that a person had driven into a garage door at a gated community in Lower Springbank.

An elderly woman behind the wheel was reported to be dead upon arrival, failing to respond to emergency life saving attempts to resuscitate her; it is believed that she succumbed to a heart attack.
