For that ‘big day’ when all eyes are on the bride, having the right hairstyle can be a crucial part of the wedding.

Donna Kennedy is a hairstylist at Fringes Hair Salon and Day Spa in Cochrane who has been in the industry for 30 years and has helped many brides and bridesmaids achieve that perfect wedding day style.

“Make sure you’ve had a good nights sleep. Really take it easy on the caffeine and drink plenty of water,” said Kennedy of how the bride should prepare for the day at the salon.

She said the bridal party often brings a photographer to capture the moments and they are also invited to bring goodies and beverages.

“Take some time out for yourself before hand and just chill out,” she said.

Over three decades, Kennedy said she has seen a lot of styles come and go – everything from glitzy sprays to immaculate hair gems to little cowboy hats incorporated into the style all at one time.

She doesn’t see those requests any more but does say that items such as veils, feathers, flowers, headpieces and head combs are still in fashion.

“It all depends on the individual,” Kennedy said. “It is OK to follow some trends, but they should be sure to choose something that represents them well.

Trends that have stayed consistent, according to Kennedy, are updos and curls, although she said that they are much looser and natural these days.

“What I’ve found over the years is curls are something that have never gone out. No one does it super straight,” she said. Kennedy recommended booking time to meet with your stylist in advance of the wedding to have a discussion about what they want their hair to look like and to bring a lot of pictures of the desired style.

She said they should also consider the style of dress and how the hair would compliment it.

Angela Battenfelder is the esthetician and receptionist at Fringes. She recommended having a few facials before the wedding for glowing skin, scheduling them once a month for three months prior. The one before the wedding should be booked about two weeks ahead of the big day.

For a pedicure, she said to book it around three days before the wedding. If you are getting artificial nails, Battenfelder said to have them done a month before to get used to them, and then again just a week before the wedding.

If the bride would like to have their makeup done, she recommended that they should have a trial run before the wedding. Both Battenfelder and Kennedy stressed the importance of booking ahead, at least four months in advance of the wedding day to ensure a spot.
