Fort Macleod folk singer, John Wort Hannam, will be returning to Cochrane for a May 16 show at Legacy Guitar and Coffee House.

Hannam was double-billed with PEAR last fall at the Alliance Church for the Cochrane Valley Folk Club season.

In the midst of recording his sixth album, Hannam is anxious to release another offering later this year. In the meantime, what began as a loose spring performance schedule took little time to fill. The coming weeks will see Hannam join award-winning songwriter, Gordie Tentrees, for a series of shows in Alberta and Saskatchewan, followed by a trip to the Woody Guthrie Music Festival in Oklahoma, then to P.E.I. and throughout Ontario.

“It’s taken a decade, but I’ve finally learned how to tour,” said Hannam, adding that with the addition of now two-year-old son, Charlie, to the home life, he tries to ‘tour smarter’ than before.

As his touring schedule has ‘matured’, so has Hannam’s songwriting chop.

“I’m not afraid to write certain songs…when I stated writing, I wrote a lot about the land, about small town characters and whenever I stepped out of that I felt like I wasn’t being authentic,” said Hannam, adding that he enjoys testing songwriting waters he’s never chartered before, finding it ‘liberating’.

With a guitar under his wing, Hannam will be performing as a duo at Legacy, joined by fiddler Scott Duncan.

Hannam’s 2012 release, Brambles and Thorns, earned three Canadian Folk Music Award nominations, produced by Leeroy Stagger.
