As the Holiday spirit sets in, don’t forget to keep your home safe this season.

“It is always a busy time at Christmas,” said Jeff Avery, safety codes officer and Cochrane firefighter.

What to do this Holiday season:

– Make sure real trees are watered

– Look into getting a fire-resistant, if using a fake tree

– Inspect decorations before decorating (I.e. check for burnt-out bulbs and frayed wires)

– Don’t overload extension cords (use power bars instead)

– Make sure cords are suitable for outdoors

– Don’t leave vehicles running indoors

– Get a carbon-monoxide (CO) detector

– Secure ladders before decorating outside

– Make sure someone knows you are going on a ladder (or roof)

– Know where the fire-extinguisher is OR Look into buying a fire-extinguisher for the house

“Everyone be cautious and have a great holiday,” Avery said.
