A 35-year-old male pedestrian from Morley was struck and killed by a motorist Dec. 13 on Hwy 1.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released at the request of his family, was believed to be walking in the pathway of the driver that struck him around 6 a.m. that morning.

The driver was travelling on Hwy 1, approximately one kilometre west of Hwy 22, south of Cochrane.

The pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver, although shaken, was not injured.

Poor road and weather conditions, along with limited visibility were believed to be factors. Speed and alcohol (with respect to the driver) are not believed to be factors.

It is not yet known if alcohol was a factor on the part of the pedestrian.

No charges are pending.

The Cochrane RCMP detachment wishes to remind Eagle readers that Checkstop season is in full swing.

“The last thing we want to do is knock on your door at 3 a.m. to inform you that a loved one is deceased as a result of impaired driving,” said Cpl. Mel Calahasen with the local detachment.

“This year, we have Checkstops in areas where people don’t usually suspect they will be.”

While Checkstops have resulted in several suspended licences this Holiday season, Calahasen said it’s also the time of the year to remind drivers to be mindful of extreme weather conditions — including icy roads, heavy snowfall and fog, limited visibility and less daylight hours.
