Several players of the Lethbridge Hurricanes WHL team are still recovering from injuries after an explosion in Bearspaw over the weekend. Ryan Vandervlis was placed into a medically-induced coma but was taken off dialysis on Monday, the team's general manager, Peter Anholt confirmed. "His bodily functions are working well so that's really positive," Anholt said of the 20-year-old. "His recovery is based on weeks and months not just days. We'll know more as we keep going forward." Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Jordy Bellerive and Matt Alfaro, each sustained substantial burn injuries to their upper bodies but will see a full recovery. "We're really pleased with their progress," Anholt said. "Their personalities are back and they're in good shape." Anholt said the incident happened last Friday night just before midnight at former Hurricane player Tyler Wong's home with nine individuals including the three injured players. "It was just a few guys chilling out," he said. "They went to start a fire with wet wood and they used an accelerant and there was an accident in some way, shape or form – I wasn't there." The Cochrane RCMP, along with Rockyview Fire and EMS responded to a fire call in the Bearspaw area of Rocky View County, located about 10 km east of Cochrane. RCMP said a substance was placed into a fire-pit that caused an explosion. There were no homes or other buildings affected by the fire. Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said there is no indication of criminal activity at this time, though the investigation is ongoing. "There's still a couple really essential statements that we need to take," Savinkoff said. The Cochrane RCMP anticipate the investigation to be complete by early next week.
