Home renovations seeing rise in popularity

“Do your homework, ask your questions, ask all kinds of questions. That’s what we’re here for,” Haynes said. “It’s important to be educated— It needs to be the right type of product for their home, their lifestyle and their budget.”

COCHRANE— One of the silver linings of the COVID-19 pandemic is it has provided the opportunity to take on home renovation projects.

Home renovations have seen a massive increase in popularity during COVID-19, said Riverbend Interiors co-owner Cathy Haynes.

“It’s been really busy, more busy then we had expected— We didn’t slow down,” Haynes said. “People got tired of being in their homes and looking at what was getting kind of tired.”

Haynes said they are seeing bigger renovations, increased popularity in carpets and main floors being converted to all hard surfaces. She noted that the projects are being tackled through a mix of professional installations and those looking to try their hands at renovations.

At Riverbend Interiors they are able to supply and install any floor cutting customers are interested in, she said, adding it has been surprising supply-only has not been a more popular option.

People often choose the installation option because Riverbend is better equipped to deal with challenges that may emerge during a project and are able to follow the health measures put in place during COVID-19,.

Haynes said they recommend people visit the store with measurements to find a quote on the price of a project.

She added that when an order is scheduled those looking to do home renovations may face a longer wait time for some products.

“It’s getting more challenging basically by the week because the supply can’t keep up with demand,” Haynes said. “I’m booking now into the end of October for supply and install on a lot of our jobs— We’re having to wait twice as long as normal.”

For those looking to do a home renovation the most important step they can take is talking to professionals, Haynes said, be it someone at Riverbend Interiors or elsewhere.

“We carry what we know is going to perform for the price,” Haynes said. “These are investments people are making into their homes.”

She added at Riverbend staff are able to walk “do-it-yourselfers” through the home renovations and share tips and tricks to finding success.

She noted that while there is a convenience to shopping at some of the bigger stores, some people can be disappointed in the quality of the product they receive.

Those seeking a home renovation can start with online research to come up with ideas for a project, Haynes said, but is essential to talk with someone who is in the industry and has experience with the different types of products available.

“Do your homework, ask your questions, ask all kinds of questions. That’s what we’re here for,” Haynes said. “It’s important to be educated— It needs to be the right type of product for their home, their lifestyle and their budget.”

Haynes cautioned to be careful when budgeting for a project because she knows people who have been burned going for cheaper products. Home renovators should treat a project as an investment they will have in their home for years to come.

She added shopping in Cochrane is also a great way to help the local economy.

“It’s a great thing to do,” Haynes said. “We definitely appreciate the local business and are more than happy to answer the questions that anybody has about any of the aspects of the different types of flooring.”
