Dr. Dennis Fundytus retired from medical practice on Aug. 30 after 40 years in Cochrane.

Every Monday, Cochrane Today will recognize a member of the community who has soared to new heights as a person or group who demonstrates the character of the mighty eagle.

This week, we are pleased to bring you Dr. Dennis Fundytus.

Fundytus came to Cochrane 40 years ago. Prior to the move, he was doing his family practice residency at the Foothills Hospital when he was approached by the head of the department at the time, Dr. George McQuitty. McQuitty offered Fundytus a position at the hospital's satellite clinic that was in Cochrane's provincial building.

Fundytus came to town, which was only 2,500 people at the time, as the community's only family doctor.

With a rural background himself, Fundytus was able to easily relate to demographics back then, which were predominately ranchers and developed a thriving practice.

Over the years, he helped contribute to growth in Cochranite's access to medical services advocating for things like ambulance services and what would eventually become the Urgent Care Centre.

Fundytus' last day at work was on Friday and he plans to spend his retirement knocking items off his bucket list.

He said the days leading up to his last day of work were emotional ones for himself and his patients.

Check out the next edition of the Cochrane Eagle for our interview with Fundytus as he reflects on his 40-year career.
