Cochrane’s own Kaleigh Jo Kirk has a lot to be proud about after this year’s 34th annual Calgary Stampede Talent Search.

Not only was Kirk named third runner up (fourth place overall), but she also won the prestigious Don Weldon ‘most promising performer’ award, which came with $1,000 and a live recording session with Up 97.7, which included a $500 honorarium.

The competition is designed to showcase young performers on a large stage.

Other competitors from the Cochrane area included Paulina Zuczek, Syndey Mae (Schweitzer) and Emma Duffy.

Kirk has been competing in the competition for several years and said she has loved each and every year, calling it a great place to showcase talent and meet other talented performers.

“For the final round everyone was so amazing. I didn’t know how they were going to make a decision honestly,” said Kirk in a phone interview from Nashville, Tenn. where she is performing at the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) show.

“I am really happy for Layten (Kramer) who has also been in the competition for a while,” said Kirk of the performer who took home the top prize.

Kirk said she was especially excited about winning the Don Weldon award, because the talent search committee chose the winner.

“It is definitely going to help with experience,” said Kirk. “It is something I can add to my resume and also I can put the money towards my career or going to university for music.”

Kirk said anyone who is thinking of joining next year, especially newcomers, should do it.

“It is a great experience and such a friendly environment,” said Kirk. “It is just an overall great competition.”
