Move over adults, the kids are back in town.

Cochrane youth are stepping up to show they care by starting the first Kids Who Care chapter in the community with the inaugural meeting tonight.

“I am excited – it will be fun to break down the barrier for the kids from all walks of life,” said Lori Toma, organizer.

The Kids Who Care chapter will be joining the ranks of adults who care in the community with kids of all ages invited to the first meeting.

“The first meeting you don’t need to be a member but after that we ask for the one-year commitment,” Toma said.

“We are also acknowledging single parents or (families) who might have a parent that works away (with no age limit) – we want everyone to be able to come.”

The fundraising concept started in the United States with 100 Women Who Care. That concept brings together 100 women to donate $100 each to a local charity. The town currently has a 100 Women Who Care Cochrane chapter that started last year and 100 Men Who Give a Damn that started this fall.

To date, the women’s chapter has raised more than $52,000 with the last donation going toward Cochrane Search and Rescue, and the men’s chapter raising $3,200 at the last meeting.

The Kids Who Care Cochrane chapter will be asking youth to attend quarterly meetings with half of the meetings to focus on hands-on acts of charity and volunteering. The other two meetings a year will generate the financial commitment of a minimum $10 donation from each participant. Organizers also hope parents will encourage the youth to “earn” the money.

“I’m excited, I just think it makes sense for our community’s future to be instilled with the idea of giving back to the community,” Toma said.

The inaugural meeting for the 100 Kids Who Care – Cochrane will be hosted on Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nan Boothby Memorial Library, located at 405 Railway St. W.

For the first meeting, organizers are asking kids to bring an unwrapped toy for the Cochrane Activettes Share Your Christmas campaign.
